Compliments of Sargent News
Email Ruth at sargentsnews@gmail.com

If any of you need a great companion, now is your chance.
PLEASE!
1. 6-7 year old Basset Hound (I would take it in a heartbeat, but it wouldn't be good for it to have to climb our stairs.)
2. Medium size mixed breed - this ones needs a country home, as it loves to run & play
3. 2 wire-haired terriers
I THINK all of these have been fixed. I know they've had their rabies shots.
Please call Lisa at: 832-723-0464 for complete info
THANK YOU!
Ruth

DEPUTY REPORTS
Matagorda County sheriff's Deputy Koenig reports that he was dispatched to Pecan Shadows in Sargent in reference to a welfare check of a White Female walking towards FM 457.  Upon arrival in the area he began his search when dispatch advised they just received a call that the woman was now walking in the middle of FM457 toward Sargent. Deputy Koenig found the subject walking in the middle of the Northbound lane.  When he spoke to her she identified herself as ....  Deputy Koenig stated that her speech was slurred and she was very unsteady on her feet.  She told Deputy Koenig that she had drank a 5th of Whiskey and was walking to a friends house to start a fight.
She was placed under arrest for Public Intoxication and transported to the Matagorda County Jail.

Local Resident Killed
Sometime during the evening of Saturday, December 3, Sargent resident, John Pearson was killed when hit by a vehicle. Mr. Pearson, or T-John as he was known to many, was walking south on Highway 457 just a short distance from county road 201, headed to his home. The driver left the scene and T-John’s body was not discovered until around 10:30 Sunday morning. Matagorda County Sheriff’s Deputies, Texas Highway Patrol and Texas Rangers all worked together to identify the suspect. Later that day, the vehicle was discovered and James Simms, of Sargent, was arrested. Simms, 22, has been charged with manslaughter and accident involving injury or death. He is presently in Matagorda County Jail. Bond is set at $10,000 on both charges.

Thank You . . . .
Sargent Area Volunteer Fire & EMS wish to extend a BIG THANK YOU to Caney Creek Chapel. The Chapel donated several very nice, heavy meeting tables to the fire department. They were much needed and much appreciated!

Watch Your Vehicle!
There have been several reports of vehicles being “keyed” around the Sargent area over the last month. Although it may seem that the damage is not much, incidents such as this need to be reported to Matagorda County Sheriff’s Department. If they don’t know this is happening, they can’t keep an eye out for us! Call 979-245-5526.

Check Your E-Mail!
By Wayne Campbell
The Works
E-Mail social engineering is an attempt to make you believe that your bank or other financial institution, the IRS UPS, FedEx or other common service has sent you a message tempting you in some fashion to open the e-mail & click on the link.
DON’T DO IT!  Banks & the IRS never communicate with you through unsecured e-mail. You generally have to log onto their site with your user name & password.   During the holidays, UPS and FedEx ship millions of packages and you may be expecting one. Remember that the shipper usually provides you with a tracking number. Be careful this holiday season as scammers will use social engineering in an attempt to take over your identity and spend lots of money on your behalf.  Protect your credit cards when shopping. There are devices that can read all the information on your card without you knowing about it.

CANDIDATE FILING STARTS MONDAY
The 18-day filing period for Democrat and Republican candidates for countywide and precinct level offices begins Monday.

Six people including incumbent Sheriff Gary Mathis, Palacios Police Chief David Miles, Gus Flores, Aaron Green, Chris Crummett and Skipper Osborne have filed the name of their campaign finance chairman in their intention to file for the sheriff’s race.

Save Your Ring-Tabs!
Axel Robertson, grandson of Dawn Rejsek, is once again collecting ring-tabs for a class project. They will be donated to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Houston. To donate your tabs, call Dawn at 979-245-7342 or 979-318-0641.

Had Your Vehicle inspected lately?
The State of Texas Environmental Control is attempting to bring Matagorda County into the same Vehicle Inspection regulations as residents of Harris and surrounding counties. What does this mean for you? It means a $40+ inspection instead of the $14.50 you now have. It means a much more rigorous inspection of your exhaust system. It also means fewer inspection stations, as the equipment needed to do these inspections is quite costly. Your Matagorda County officials are rigorously fighting this proposal – hopefully more information coming soon.

Attention: Sargent Business Owners
Sargent’s News will begin work on the “2012 Sargent Business Directory” immediately after the holidays. We hope to have it out by the end of February. For those of you not familiar with the directory, it is much like a phone book yellow pages. Local businesses are listed by category (i.e. “Restaurants”, “Realtors”, etc.) with your business name, address or e-mail address & phone numbers. We distribute 3,000 of these through the year. The cost this year will be $15 for your 1st listing. If you have more than one listing or need listing under multiple categories, additional lines will be $10 each. Pretty good price for a year’s worth of advertising! Deadline for your ad is January 31. Send in your information & payment to:

It was Palm Sunday and because of a sore throat, 5-year old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm branches. The boy asked what they were for. “People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by.” “wouldn’t you just know it,” the boy fumed, “The one Sunday I don’t go, he shows up!”

We Should All Speak Up!
The following letter was a class project for 11 year old Shelby Finuff. Each member of her class was asked to write a letter to be sent to a soldier. Shelby is the niece of Sargent’s “Sarge” Goff. We thought you might enjoy reading . . .
My name is Shelby Marie Finuff and I would like to thank the men and women that have served and are still serving for my freedom today. I am so grateful to have all of these wonderful people that protect me and my country. I consider you all my HEROES! I know all of you have sacrificed so much for me and our country and I know I could never say enough words to describe how much I appreciate that. I want to give you all a big bear hug and bring happiness to your lives from a little girl with a big heart! Since I’m not able to give you all a hug I hope with all of my heart that you will accept a long distance air hug with a big I Love You and Thank You so much. God bless each and every one of you.
Forever Grateful,
Shelby Finuff
p.s. My dad says, “Semper Fi”!
